The AAWSM 2018 meeting was held at the University of Alabama Birmingham from April 13th-14th, 2018. Thank you to all of our participants!
A letter from our AASWM 2018 Conference Chair:
"Dear AAWSM 2018 Attendees,
On behalf of this year’s organizing committee, thank you for making AAWSM 2018 an engaging time of interactive discussion and brainstorming. As I continue to digest much of the discussion topics presented by our expert facilitators and keynote speakers, I hope you will join with me to keep the dialogue open. Our morning session focused on several gender disparities pertaining to work-life balance in academia, as well as biases facing women during interviewing and job negotiation. The afternoon sessions provided guidance for our advocates to support several areas of need for women in science and medicine, from leadership training to combating stagnancy and burnout.
We are excited to announce that next year’s conference will be hosted by Tulane University in New Orleans! The date has not yet been selected, but we will do our best to accommodate the many schedules. Stay tuned!
I leave you with a few of my favorite statements from the weekend, and I invite you to share your own:
- Sometimes, succeeding is the best way to ‘get-back’ at them [critics]. - Jayme Locke, M.D. (Friday’s Keynote)
- No matter where you are, own yourself. - Sam Giordano, Ph.D. (regarding confidence during interviews)
- Don’t be paralyzed by ‘perfection.’ Sometimes ‘Good Enough’ is good enough. - Lori McMahon, Ph.D. (Saturday’s Keynote)
- Make your negotiation about what THEY can gain from you. - Sam Giordano, Ph.D. (on “Interviewing and Negotiations.”)
Thank you again, and see you next year!"
-Mark Pepin, MS | MD-PhD Trainee (UAB)
